Unveiling Artistic Horizons: Art Basel's Visionary Commissions

Art Basel Spotlights New Gold Awardees for 2026 Edition

Art Basel has recently unveiled comprehensive information regarding the prominent site-specific installations crafted by Nairy Baghramian and Ibrahim Mahama, slated for presentation at its main fair in Switzerland this June. Both artists have been honored as the first-ever Gold Award recipients by Art Basel, with their commissions initially announced in February.

Nairy Baghramian's "Modèle vivant (S'empilant)" at Messeplatz Fountain

On the Messeplatz, Iranian-born German sculptor Nairy Baghramian is set to exhibit Modèle vivant (S’empilant) (2026). This intricate installation is conceptualized for the square's fountain, featuring four large, lavender-hued biomorphic forms. These elements are strategically positioned on geometric steel structures built around the fountain's cascading water. Accompanying the main piece, a bench-like pedestal adorned with tiles and photographic impressions of flies will be displayed nearby.

Ibrahim Mahama's "The God of Small Things" at Münsterplatz

Meanwhile, at Münsterplatz, Ghanaian installation artist Ibrahim Mahama will introduce his installation titled The God of Small Things (2026). This artwork comprises multiple sculptural components suspended to forge an expansive, immersive environment. Drawing its name from Arundhati Roy's novel, the piece incorporates rubber cast-offs sourced from a Ghanaian factory established post-independence, reflecting on historical and industrial narratives.

Unlimited Sector: Engaging with Global Challenges

The fair also provided updates on its various sectors. Ruba Katrib, Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at MoMA PS1, will curate Unlimited for the first time. This platform for large-scale projects will feature 59 works from 66 galleries, showcasing artists whose practices profoundly address current political, social, and ecological concerns. Notable exhibits include Isa Genzken’s Untitled (2018), presented by Galerie Buchholz, Hauser & Wirth, and David Zwirner; Tracey Emin’s Knowing my Enemy (2002) from White Cube; and Oskar Schlemmer’s Homo, Composition in Metal (1930–31), presented by Leandro Navarro and Thaddaeus Ropac.

Parcours: Artistic Interventions in Basel's Urban Fabric

In the Parcours section, curated by Stefanie Hessler, 22 projects from 31 galleries will be integrated into public and historic venues across Basel, such as outdoor spaces, vacant apartments, and shops. Hessler highlighted the significance of public space in contemporary discourse, stating that this year's presentation delves into the promise and complexities of 'conviviality' through artistic interventions that permeate the city's urban landscape. The sector will feature a majority of new and recent works alongside pivotal historical pieces, exploring themes of ecology, labor, artistic community, intergenerational transmission, mythologies, and the economic and political systems of valuation through a diverse urban choreography. Highlights include new posters by Sarah Crowner, distributed across the tram and presented by Galerie Max Hetzler and Galerie Nordenhake in collaboration with Luhring Augustine, and Haegue Yang’s installations from her ongoing Intermediates series, which will drape across the Mittlere Brücke and incorporate equipment from an artisanal distillery, presented by Kukje Gallery and neugerriemschnieder.

Expanded Offerings: Main Sector, Kabinett, Features, Premiere, Statements, and Edition

Further details have also been released concerning the main sector, along with information for Kabinett, Features, Premiere, Statements, and Edition, promising a rich and varied artistic experience for all attendees.
