Collector Car Show and Chili Cook-Off: Twin Pillars of Sarasota Firefighters' Support

Instructions

In the heart of Sarasota, two annual events serve as vital fundraisers for the Firefighters Benevolent Fund, which provides essential assistance to firefighters and their families during emergencies. The Morton’s Firehouse Chili Cook-Off and the Devereaux-Kaiser Collector Car Show stand out as key contributors to this mission. This year's car show, held on April 27 at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, featured approximately 400 classic vehicles, celebrating both automotive history and the 70th anniversary of the iconic Thunderbird.

According to Dana Anderson, vice president of the fund and a captain with the Sarasota Fire Department, the car show has gained momentum since the organization took over its management in 2019. Although it doesn’t draw the crowds of earlier years when it was held at Sarasota Square Mall—where attendance peaked at around 1,000 cars—it continues to grow in popularity. Anderson expressed optimism about reaching those numbers again in the future.

The event not only attracts seasoned enthusiasts but also draws younger generations into the world of classic automobiles. Wayne Stephens, a long-time attendee who has participated in the show for four decades, praised it as one of the best exhibitions in Sarasota. He emphasized the need for greater public awareness, noting how the vibrant array of vehicles captivates all ages. “It’s like stepping into a candy store,” Stephens remarked, highlighting the visual appeal of the diverse colors and designs on display.

As these events continue to thrive, they underscore the community spirit that supports local heroes. By combining culinary competition with a celebration of automotive heritage, the initiatives foster connections while raising funds for critical causes. The dual focus on chili cook-offs and collector car shows ensures ongoing support for the brave men and women who protect Sarasota every day.
