A notable characteristic of this frame is its intricately designed lugs, meticulously hand-carved by Bob Keeling, a celebrated craftsman at the Carlton facility. Dave Marsh, the bike's owner, acquired it in 1975 while working at Carlton as a bike builder. He recounts Keeling's dedication, noting that he maintained detailed drawings of every Carlton lug pattern and even fashioned his own tools for their creation. The frame itself was constructed by Rick Powell, another highly skilled artisan at the Worksop factory.
Marsh expressed his deep admiration for the International, considering it his ultimate cycling aspiration. While many revered the Jewel as Carlton's premier model, Marsh firmly believed the International surpassed it in excellence, praising its unparalleled craftsmanship. The frame was expertly fashioned from Reynolds 531 'Superlight' tubing, then adorned with a distinctive 'flam purple,' white, and gold paint scheme by Powell.
The cockpit features Cinelli Criterium handlebars paired with a Cinelli 1R stem. The groupset, a Campagnolo Super Record, includes 52t/42t chainrings. Marsh's choice of wheel components was driven by both function and aesthetics. He selected a low-flange Campagnolo hub for the front wheel, opting for a HiLo hub on the rear to enhance drive-side stiffness. The cassette, a compact 6-speed 13t/18t, was chosen specifically to maintain an unobstructed view of the high-flange hub's elegant design. The hubs are expertly laced to Campagnolo Omega V-profile clincher rims and fitted with Vittoria Open Corsa Evo SC amber wall tires. Marsh fondly describes the bike's ride as being as smooth as its appearance suggests.
