Laboratorium Coffee Shop: A Modern Revival of Historical Architecture in Cluj-Napoca

Instructions

EktraArhitectura's Laboratorium Coffee Shop in Cluj-Napoca represents a harmonious blend of historical restoration and contemporary architectural intervention. Situated within the venerable Palatul Széki, a 19th-century landmark, the project breathes new life into a space once occupied by the Matia Corvin Pharmacy. This 100 square meter establishment, completed in 2025, meticulously preserves the building's original character while introducing modern elements that cater to its new function as a vibrant coffee shop. The design, spearheaded by lead architect Tulogdy László and featuring interior design by Fain Design Studio, highlights a thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse, creating an inviting atmosphere that respects its rich heritage.

The Laboratorium Coffee Shop project is located on the ground floor of Palatul Széki, an iconic building in the heart of Cluj-Napoca. This structure is one of four corner buildings erected in the late 19th century, marking the gateway to the city center and serving as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the era. The choice of this specific location for a modern coffee shop underscores a deliberate effort to revitalise historical urban spaces and integrate them into contemporary city life. The architects aimed to create a space that not only serves its new purpose but also tells a story of its past, inviting patrons to connect with the building's rich history.

The design process involved extensive restoration efforts, particularly concerning the existing wooden elements, handled by Unicom - Balla Csaba, and the intricate painting restoration led by Mednyánszky Zsolt and his team. These restorative measures were crucial in preserving the aesthetic and structural integrity of the historic interiors. Simultaneously, modern interventions, such as custom stainless steel objects manufactured by Borodi Design, were seamlessly integrated. The juxtaposition of old and new materials and design philosophies creates a unique ambiance that is both nostalgic and distinctly contemporary.

The interior layout of the Laboratorium Coffee Shop was carefully planned to maximise functionality and create diverse spatial experiences within the 100 square meter footprint. The design language prioritises natural light and an open feel, promoting a sense of community and interaction. Thoughtful placement of seating, a well-defined service area, and subtle architectural details contribute to a cohesive and pleasant environment. This project exemplifies how architectural ingenuity can transform historical sites into modern amenities, offering a sustainable model for urban development that honors the past while embracing the future.

The transformation of the Matia Corvin Pharmacy into the Laboratorium Coffee Shop showcases a successful architectural endeavor that respects historical context while meeting contemporary needs. The project highlights the significance of careful restoration work alongside innovative design to create spaces that are both functional and rich in character. This new establishment serves as a cultural and social hub, contributing to the vibrant life of Cluj-Napoca's city center.
