Patriots Eye Brian Thomas Jr. as Alternative Receiver Target

Instructions

The New England Patriots are actively seeking to bolster their receiving corps for the upcoming 2026 season. Following a surprisingly strong 2025 campaign that saw them reach the Super Bowl, the team recognizes the need for significant upgrades to remain competitive. With quarterback Drake Maye needing a top target, the franchise has been exploring options, including a high-profile trade for AJ Brown, but new possibilities are emerging that could offer a more financially viable solution.

The Patriots' pursuit of a premier wide receiver intensified after the departure of Stefon Diggs. While AJ Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles was a primary target, reports indicate that the Eagles' asking price, rumored to be at least a first-round and a second-round pick, is proving to be a significant hurdle. The Patriots had reportedly offered a first and third-round pick, but this appears to fall short of Philadelphia's demands. This negotiation impasse has led New England to explore other promising avenues.

An alternative has presented itself in Brian Thomas Jr., currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to SNY NFL insider Connor Hughes, the Jaguars are open to trade offers for the talented wide receiver. Thomas Jr., the 23rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, demonstrated exceptional potential during his rookie year, accumulating 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 receptions, earning him Pro Bowl honors. While his production saw a dip in 2025 under a new offensive scheme, tallying 48 catches for 707 yards and two touchdowns in 14 starts, his earlier performance highlights his capacity to be a top receiver in the league.

Acquiring Thomas Jr. would still require a substantial investment, likely starting with a first-round pick, similar to the initial offer for Brown. However, the younger Thomas Jr., at 23, offers a longer-term solution and is currently under a team-friendly contract for two more seasons, with an option for a third in 2028. This contractual situation makes him a potentially more attractive and less financially burdensome acquisition for the Patriots, especially when compared to the higher cost and potentially larger contract demands of a veteran like Brown. Investing in Thomas Jr. could provide Drake Maye with a dynamic weapon while allowing the team greater financial flexibility for future roster building.
