Peacock Watch Company, a Chinese manufacturer with a rich history dating back to 1957, has unveiled its latest creation: the Haiyi Tourbillon Yu. This limited-edition 40mm dive watch stands out with its intricate Lindsay-engraved enamel dial, offered in striking blue, purple, and green hues. Far from being just a robust timepiece for aquatic adventures, the Haiyi Tourbillon Yu incorporates an in-house flying tourbillon movement, showcasing Peacock's commitment to high-end mechanical watchmaking. Positioned at a surprisingly competitive price, it invites enthusiasts to explore a new dimension of sophisticated yet functional horology.
Originating from Dandong, China, Peacock Watch Company began its journey as the Antong Metal Products Factory, producing one of China’s first mechanical timepieces. Over the decades, it has transformed into a leading movement manufacturer globally, particularly renowned for its complicated calibers. With a nickname like "The Geneva of the East," Dandong reflects the brand's impressive watchmaking prowess. Peacock's evolution includes pioneering China's first chronograph movement in 1999 and introducing its inaugural tourbillon watch in 2003, highlighting a continuous pursuit of horological innovation. This dedication is further exemplified by award-winning models like the Black Hole with its central tourbillon and the ultra-thin Divine Craft, underscoring the brand's technical capabilities and artistic flair in crafting complex timepieces.
The Haiyi Tourbillon Yu, which translates to "Island" in English, encapsulates nearly seven decades of Peacock's expertise. Its 40mm case, crafted from 904L steel, boasts a 47mm lug-to-lug length and a 12.2mm thickness. Equipped with an antireflective sapphire crystal, a sapphire bezel insert, and a helium escape valve, the watch offers an impressive 300-meter water resistance, making it a true dive instrument. It comes with either a color-matched, shark-inspired rubber strap or a meticulously crafted steel bracelet featuring 48 links with polished and brushed finishes. However, the most captivating aspect remains its dial.
The dial is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, featuring a translucent enamel surface with hand-executed Lindsay engraving. This technique creates a layered pattern of 190 waves and 78 intersections, designed to mimic the natural movement of tidal waves. Unlike traditional engraving, Lindsay engraving utilizes pneumatic impulses for precise, fluid patterns, resulting in a delicate and accurate representation of oceanic motion. The complex manufacturing process involves applying five individual layers of enamel, each 0.03mm thick, followed by a lengthy firing and polishing process. This meticulous work reduces the enamel to a mere 0.06mm, allowing the underlying engraving to shimmer through, creating a stunning illusion of depth and movement. Even with a green hue, which might not typically evoke clear water, the effect is undeniably captivating.
Adding to its refined aesthetics are the delicate, 0.4mm-thin transparent sapphire hands. These hands contribute to the dial's lightness while their luminous material, along with the applied markers and sapphire dive bezel, reinforces the watch's functional dive capabilities. At its core, the Haiyi Tourbillon is powered by the manual-winding in-house caliber PAX9610B. This movement operates at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800vph) and provides a substantial 68-hour power reserve. Its top plate is adorned with rainbow Geneva waves, complementing a double-spiral great wheel and radiating finishes across the gear train. Visible through the sapphire case back, etched inscriptions and beveled screws reveal the movement's intricate decoration. The true spectacle, however, is the flying tourbillon at 6 o'clock on the dial.
This in-house flying tourbillon is remarkably slim at just 3.5mm and features a Gyromax free-sprung balance with four inertia weights. This advanced system allows for more precise adjustments than conventional screw mechanisms, ensuring optimal hairspring geometry and long-term timekeeping accuracy. To enhance its visual appeal, a micro-set natural sparkling diamond on the tourbillon bridge creates a mesmerizing effect, reminiscent of a flying fish in motion—a subtle yet captivating detail.
The Peacock Haiyi Tourbillon is more than just a watch; it's a testament to the brand's innovative spirit and technical prowess. Priced at US$3,499, this timepiece offers an exceptional blend of sophisticated design and high-horology complications, an offering rarely seen in its price segment. Its unique blend of artistic engraving, translucent enamel, and a flying tourbillon makes it a distinctive choice for collectors seeking something beyond the ordinary. The watch is also available in gradient blue Xi ("Tide") and smoky purple Huan ("Magical") versions, each limited to 199 pieces, providing appealing options for those looking to add a vibrant and unique piece to their collection while experiencing a new frontier of watchmaking excellence.
